Kuniyoshi's Beauties
The beautiful women Kuniyoshi depicts are bright, lively, wholesome, and down-to-earth. His work is characterized by the way in which he captures casual moments of everyday life and depicts the unadorned charm of common women. Also of note are the beautiful kimono patterns drawn by Kuniyoshi, who was the son of a fabric dyer in Nihonbashi.
Kuniyoshi also depicted beauties on fan-shaped prints called "uchiwa-e." At the time, uchiwa-e were pasted on bamboo frames, and fans were an important summer fashion item for the people of Edo.
