Cats Suggested as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road
The title of this piece is a spoof of the fifty-three stations on the T?kaid?, which are the rest areas along the coastal route that ran from Edo to Kyoto. The work is spread over three prints (triptych format), and each of the 55 illustrations of cats is a play on words based on the names of the 53 stations plus Nihonbashi and Kyoto, the beginning and end points of the Tokaido route. Kuniyoshi was famous for being a cat-lover, and the cats in this piece are lovingly portrayed, each one capturing a different aspect of a cat’s charm in a humorous way with great accuracy and careful observation.

Nozarashi Gosuke
This piece belongs to a ten-piece series featuring characters from plays and historical novels who are known for their chivalrous spirit. Featured in this piece is Nozarashi Gosuke, the main character in the kabuki play “Sui bodai godo no Nozarashi,” which was based on the yomihon (illustrated book) by Santo Kyoden called “Honcho sui bodai zenden” and dramatized by Kawatake Mokuami. Nozarashi Gosuke was a chivalrous man who fought for the oppressed against the oppressor. It is said that he wore a kimono adorned with a pattern of weather-beaten (nozarashi) skulls because he was committed to getting people out of trouble as if pulling grass out of the eyes of weather-beaten skulls.
