TOKYO-1:荒川区&墨田区【隅田川沿い】 Sumida River
歌川広重「名所江戸百景 隅田川水神の森真崎」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Utagawa Hiroshige "Suijin Grove and Massaki on the Sumida River"

This work depicts the scenery seen from Mukojima, looking out towards the Suijin Grove that protects the Suijin Shrine (currently Sumidagawa Shrine) and the Massaki area on the opposite bank of the Sumida River. During the Edo period, the embankment on the east bank of the Sumida River was one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Edo. A bold composition with a close-up of the cherry blossoms and soft colors captures the idyllic spring scenery.

Shioiri Park on the opposite bank from Mukojima, and Sumida Park spreading both sides of the Sumida River are currently famous cherry blossom viewing spots in this area. There, you can also enjoy the beautiful collaboration of cherry blossoms and Tokyo Skytree, the tallest building in Japan.

TOKYO-2:小金井市【小金井】 Koganei
歌川広重「江戸近郊八景 小金井橋夕照」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Utagawa Hiroshige "Evening Glow at Koganei"

Although located in the suburbs, Koganei was a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in Edo. This is an evening view near Koganei Bridge, with rows of cherry trees in full bloom on both banks of the Tamagawa Josui waterway, and Mt. Fuji in the distance. The composition, with a large sky to accommodate a kyoka poem, creates a nostalgic feeling that is both beautiful and somewhat desolate.

Koganei Bridge, although changed in shape, still spans the Tamagawa Josui waterway today. In addition to the cherry trees planted along Tamagawa Josui, the nearby Koganei Park is home to approximately 1,400 cherry trees of about 50 different varieties. The vast park, which is approximately the size of 17 Tokyo Domes, includes the Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum and other attractions, making it a great place to spend a relaxing day.

TOKYO-3:台東区【上野】 Ueno
歌川広重「名所江戸百景 上野清水堂不忍ノ池」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Utagawa Hiroshige "The Kiyomizudo Temple and Shinobazu Pond in Ueno"

The Ueno area in Tokyo is still a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing. From the top of Kiyomizudo Temple, which was built to resemble Kyoto's Kiyomizudera Temple, the people of Edo could see Shinobazu Pond, Nakajima Benzaiten, and the mansions of feudal lords on Hongo Plateau. The famous "Tsuki no Matsu (Moon Pine)" is also depicted on the left-hand side of the composition. The bright vermilion and the pink of the cherry blossoms are gorgeous, making this a piece full of the brightness of spring.

Ueno Park is one of Tokyo's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots. It is always crowded during the cherry blossom season, and in the evening, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms illuminated with paper lanterns. The Tokyo National Museum and the National Museum of Western Art are located nearby, so it is also recommended that you enjoy the cherry blossoms while touring the museums.

葛飾北斎「新板浮絵王子稲荷飛鳥山之図」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Katsushika Hokusai "Perspective View of Oji Inari Shrine, Asukayama"

Hokusai captured Asukayama, which was popular as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the Edo period, from a bird's-eye view in the style of "uki-e," which incorporated the Western laws of perspective. The composition, in which the entire surface is colored in pale pink and the horizon is high, depicts the gorgeousness of spring, yet gives off a somewhat magical atmosphere.

Asukayama, located in Oji, Tokyo, has remained one of Tokyo's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots since the Edo period. The park is equipped with play equipment, and has a children's area and a toddler area, so it's a great place to spend time with your family. You can enjoy seasonal flowers throughout the year, such as hydrangeas during the rainy season and autumn leaves in the fall.

Utagawa Hiroshige "The Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama"

Arashiyama, which has been written about in waka poems since ancient times and is known for its scenic beauty, was also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot during the Edo period. Hiroshige takes full advantage of the rich and vivid colors unique to nishiki-e to create an outstanding composition of the beautiful Arashiyama in spring, with the Togetsu Bridge that crosses the surface diagonally, the bright green of the trees, and the pink of the cherry blossoms that stands out against the blue of the Katsura River.

Togetsu Bridge, which spans the Katsura River in Arashiyama, Kyoto, is a famous landmark of Arashiyama, and was named after a poem written by the Kamakura period Emperor Kameyama. The area is rich in nature, and from along the Katsura River, you can enjoy a scenic view of Togetsu Bridge and the cherry blossoms blooming in Arashiyama. Nakanoshima Park (Arashiyama Park Nakanoshima Area) is also a cherry blossom viewing spot that is crowded with many visitors every year.

KANSAI-2:大阪府【天保山】 Tempozan, OSAKA

Katsushika Hokusai "Tempo-zan at the Estuary of Aji River in Settsu Province"

This is one of Hokusai's series "Famous Bridges in Various Provinces," which depicts bridges across the country. Tempozan is a man-made hill made from earth and sand from river works, offering a panoramic view of Osaka Bay from the mouth of Aji River, and was a popular tourist destination during the Edo period. This piece is a bird's-eye view capturing the entire area of Tempozan.

Tempozan Park is located in Osaka's bay area, which is lined with commercial facilities such as Kaiyukan aquarium and Tempozan Marketplace. Tempozan is a hill with an altitude of 4.53 meters, and you can enjoy a beautiful view of cherry blossoms near the summit at Tempozan Park.

KANSAI-3:奈良県【吉野】 Mt.Yoshino, NARA

Katsushika Hokusai "Yoshino"

The cherry trees of Mt. Yoshino have been worshiped as sacred trees in the religion of Shugendo since ancient times. It is said that in the early Edo period, these cherry trees of Mt. Yoshino were transplanted to Kan'eiji Temple in Ueno, and Gotenyama in Shinagawa, famous cherry blossom viewing spots. Hokusai captured Yoshino's cherry blossom in full bloom filling the entire valley in a bold and magnificent composition.

It is said that there are approximately 30,000 cherry trees on Mt. Yoshino, and in spring, the entire surface of Mt. Yoshino is dyed pink, creating a spectacular scene. Additionally, the timing of the blossoms coming into bloom differs depending on various factors such as altitude and topography, so one of the attractions of Mt. Yoshino is that you can enjoy a variety of cherry blossoms over a period of about one month.
