Dragon
2024 is the year of “Dragon” in the Chinese zodiac calendar. In ukiyo-e, a dragon was depicted as a sacred and lucky animal and sometimes the evolved form of a carp. In ancient China, the dragon was often considered a symbol of the emperor. In this magnificent work, Hiroshige boldly depicted a descending dragon breaking through the clouds. It is Hiroshige’s late work, but the brush strokes are very powerful.
