Autumn Scenes of Japan in Ukiyo-e

Utagawa Hiroshige
Asakusa Paddy Field and Torinoichi
This composition, depicting the view from an interior looking out, takes as its setting Asakusa Tanbo, where the waiting rooms for the women who worked in the Yoshiwara district once stood. Beyond the lattice window, Mount Fuji rises in the distance, and along the paths between the rice fields, countless people can be seen walking home from the Tori-no-ichi Fair, carrying decorative rakes (kumade) as lucky charms. The teacup and hairpin that seem to recall the unseen occupant of the room, together with the back view of a cat gazing outside through the lattice, resonate beautifully with the early winter scenery, making this a lyrical and quietly nostalgic work.

Katsushika Hokusai
Bellflower and Dragon-fly
This print depicts the Chinese bellflower (kikyo; Platycodon grandiflower) and a dragon fly against a warm yellow background.Like another Hokusai’s masterpiece of flowers and birds, “the Tree-peony and Butterfly”, only the top part of the plant, with its lush leaves and flowers, is rendered. Even though Hokusai does not show the entire plant, he carefully observes the bellflower in a naturalistic manner, at a moment when it responds to a slight change in the air, offering a place for a red-bodied dragonfly to alight.

Suzuki Harunobu
A Girl Collecting Chrysanthemum Dew by the Stream
This is a mitate-e (parody picture) in which an ancient Chinese wizard is shown in the appearnce of a beautiful girl. The artist depicts the girl picking chrysanthemums besides a flowing brook in a horizontal composition termed yokoban, a rarity at taht time.
