[Utamaro] Works with mosquito nets and see-through effects

Mosquito nets were a summer feature in Edo and used as a prop to set the scene in ukiyo-e. Utamaro in particular incorporated mosquito nets in his works to create a see-through effect, emphasizing the exquisite features and beautiful complexion of the women he portrayed. By creating a contrast between people on the outside and the inside of the net, he showcased the beauty of the women seen through the mosquito net.

Two woodblocks were produced to print the mesh net, one for the vertical lines and one for the horizontal lines. Such efforts were made to create the three-dimensional and see-through effects of the mosquito nets. This is a collection of works by Utamaro that include mosquito nets and see-through effects.
