Kiki Smith "Paper Wasps Nest"

A wasps’ nest is rendered through the delicate interplay of four overlapping colors, set against a luminous blue sky. This work was completed through close collaboration between the internationally renowned American artist Kiki Smith and master carvers and printers who carry on the traditional techniques of ukiyo-e woodcut printmaking, and it springs from Smith’s open-ended approach to printmaking as a site for new experimentation. By uniting the artist’s original conception with the refined skill of today’s master carvers and printers, Paper Wasps Nest points the way toward new frontiers in woodcut printmaking.
