Parody of Bodhidharma (Daruma) Crossing the River on a Reed

The red "Daruma" doll is very popular in Japan, especially to wish for something. One of Harunobu's masterpieces, "Mitate Daruma," depicts a lady wearing a red kimono. Harunobu hides the fact that the lady was originally "Daruma," which is a very interactive play or quiz in his time. The beautiful lady, wearing Daruma's red robe and seemingly surrendering to the flow, is enveloped in a fleeting and fantastical atmosphere.

The romance of Harunobu’s art is ascribable, on one hand, to his personality, and, on the other, to his attempt to introduce the feeling of real life into the conventionalized “ beauty pictures”. After the establishment of his style in 1765, he continued to maintain and improve it until he finally brought the “Hornbook style” to perfection. He died in 1770 at the still invigorated age of forty-six.
