歌川広重「東海道五拾三次 神奈川 台之景」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Kanagawa -Scenery at the Height -Fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road-

The road rises steeply at the right, with a procession of travelers, two of whom are accosted by women trying to drag them into the tea-houses. In the bay, a large sailing boat at anchor, towards which a small boat with two men is being rowed. Other small boats and sailing boats in the distance at the left. Above, a jagged patch of blue in the white sky. Kanagawa today is the port of Yokohama, and hardly anything remains to remind us of this landscape view by Hiroshige.

Hiroshige was born in 1797, the time when Ukiyo-e was at the height of popularity. He was good at painting since his childhood. At fifteen, through introduction of a certain book dealer, he became a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro, and was given the artist name Utagawa Hiroshige the following year. The essential characteristic of Hiroshige’s art lies in its poetic atmosphere, which in fact is the characteristic of the Japanese heart. When this lyricism is given free play, there is beautiful music in the picture.
