歌川広重「東海道五拾三次 荒井 渡舟ノ図」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Arai -The Ferry-boat -Fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road-

A ferry-boat with peasants crossing the estuary from the left. In the center, a daimyo's boat, screened, with banners and spears. The contrast between these crossing vessels--the humorous plebian spirit of the one, and the arrogant stateliness of the other--is not without satirical connotations. Arai was located on the western bank of the Imagiri Inlet. It was one of the important barrier-towns on the Tokaido. The check-point can be seen here on the far shore.

Hiroshige was born in 1797, the time when Ukiyo-e was at the height of popularity. He was good at painting since his childhood. At fifteen, through introduction of a certain book dealer, he became a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro, and was given the artist name Utagawa Hiroshige the following year. The essential characteristic of Hiroshige’s art lies in its poetic atmosphere, which in fact is the characteristic of the Japanese heart. When this lyricism is given free play, there is beautiful music in the picture.
