Street Scene at Nihonbashi -One Hundred Famous Views of Edo-

This print is a scene of Nihonbashi Bridge as seen from Shirokiya Store at the Nihonbashi intersection.In the center is a Sumiyoshi dancing group. Several dancers and singers, clad in white, wear sedge hats and aprons, with fans in their hands. They are dancing around a man carrying a green umbrella with crimson cloth flappings and are singing to the tunes of shamisen (the Japanese banjo). They go from door to door for money or rice in return for what they claim ‘divine protection’ of Sumiyoshi Shrine of Osaka. Really they are not the messengers of the shrine but entertainers living in Edo.A melon vendor on the right and a delivery-boy of a soba (buckwheat noodles) shop add a touch of a downtown atmosphere to the scene.

Hiroshige was born in 1797, the time when Ukiyo-e was at the height of popularity. He was good at painting since his childhood. At fifteen, through introduction of a certain book dealer, he became a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro, and was given the artist name Utagawa Hiroshige the following year. The essential characteristic of Hiroshige’s art lies in its poetic atmosphere, which in fact is the characteristic of the Japanese heart. When this lyricism is given free play, there is beautiful music in the picture.
