Celebrate Wave Day on July 3!
10% Off Ukiyo-e Wave Prints
July 3 is Nami no Hi, or Wave Day. To celebrate, we are offering two masterpieces of waves by Hokusai and Hiroshige, selected from the many wave scenes found in ukiyo-e, at 10% off for a limited time.
Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige are two of the greatest masters of ukiyo-e. Both depicted waves and Mount Fuji, yet their approaches could not be more different.
In Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, a towering wave fills the horizontal composition, seeming almost ready to swallow the boats tossed about on the rough sea. The work’s powerful sense of tension draws the viewer into the very heart of the wave.
In Hiroshige’s The Sea off Satta in Suruga Province, the vertical composition is used to striking effect, with a great wave in the foreground, steep cliffs beyond, and the foothills of Mount Fuji in the distance. The result is a magnificent landscape with remarkable depth and scale.
Though both works share the theme of waves and Mount Fuji, each reveals a distinct and unforgettable appeal. We invite you to enjoy Hokusai’s dramatic wave and Hiroshige’s majestic landscape during this special limited-time offer.

Hokusai’s Great Wave Continues to Captivate the World
The Great Wave off Kanagawa
Now Hokusai's "Great Wave" is representative of ukiyo-e itself. It is one of Hokusai's most successful series, "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" and astonishing for its fantastic composition and powerful brushwork, showing a giant wave crashing over a boat. The low-angle perspective and shaded waves constitute the key to this work which is one of the foremost masterpieces, and most well known of all the ukiyo-e landscape compositions.

Hiroshige’s Majestic Seascape Captures Nature’s Grandeur
The Sea off Satta in Suruga Province
This work is one of the masterpieces from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a series said to have been created by Hiroshige in response to Hokusai. It depicts the celebrated view of Mount Fuji across Suruga Bay from the area around Satta Pass, located between Yui and Okitsu, two post stations along the Tokaido. The contrast between the high, spray-filled wave in the foreground and the calm expanse of Suruga Bay in the distance gives the composition a striking sense of depth and drama. The powerful wave also recalls Hokusai’s masterpiece The Great Wave off Kanagawa, revealing Hiroshige’s bold spirit as he took on the challenge of depicting waves and Mount Fuji in his own distinctive way.
