The "Copied Book of the Scroll of Frolicking Animals and Humans (Formerly Owned by the Nagao Family)" is the oldest extant reproduction of the famous scroll, created during the Muromachi period as a faithful copy of the "Scroll of Frolicking Animals and Humans."
The original "Scroll of Frolicking Animals and Humans," a National Treasure housed at Kōzan-ji Temple, is thought to have undergone changes in sequence, with some sections lost over time. The Nagao Family's reproduction offers a rare glimpse into the original state of Volume A of the scroll.
The snake leaping out of the thicket featured in this woodcut is taken from the final scene of Volume A.
