歌川広重「名所江戸百景 猿わか町夜の景」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Night at Saruwakacho -One Hundred Famous Views of Edo-

This print is from Hiroshige’s late series of “One hundred Views of Famous Places of Edo”. The street scene of Saruwaka town which is famous for Kabuki theaters at night is depicted. Hiroshige used one-point perspective for this street view with shadows of full moon. A bright blue night with a full moon is impressive. It is said that Van Gogh was impressed by this work and drew his oil painting of “Cafe Terrace at Night”.

Hiroshige was born in 1797, the time when Ukiyo-e was at the height of popularity. He was good at painting since his childhood. At fifteen, through introduction of a certain book dealer, he became a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro, and was given the artist name Utagawa Hiroshige the following year. The essential characteristic of Hiroshige’s art lies in its poetic atmosphere, which in fact is the characteristic of the Japanese heart. When this lyricism is given free play, there is beautiful music in the picture.

◆STORY1:The street view of Saruwaka-cho area

This is one of prints from Hiroshige's successful series, "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". It is a very unique piece of the series and depicts the street view of Saruwaka-cho area where it is famous for many theaters and their related stores or restaurants.

Hiroshige boldly used the perspective effect from front to back in the impressive night scene with a full moon.

The sign in the front is for Morita Theater which is one of three major theaters in Edo. All these three theaters are in Saruwaka-cho.

This print shows that Hiroshige learned western expressions such as that of people's shadows under the moon. Interestingly it likely seems that Van Gogh copied the composition of this print into his work of "Cafe Terrace at Night". So Hiroshige learned from the West and Van Gogh learned from the East!

The subtle cloud over the lower part of the moon is printed with the technique of "Atenashi bokashi - random gradation-" which is totally printer's improvisation. (This specific part of gradation only appeared in the early edition. )

Hiroshige often added people and living creatures with cute and comical facial expressions which gives warmth to his pieces.

◆STORY2:Thin cloud shading - The special print technique "Atenashi bokashi"

Thin cloud shading in the lower part of the moon is a 'random' addition by the printer, which is printed with the special technique called, "Atenashi bokashi". The form or location of such insertions out of the printer's freak are various. The shading is omitted in later prints although it must be added with Hiroshige's intention. The ukiyo-e repriductions by the Adachi Institute are produced based on the early editions.

"Atenashi bokashi -random gradation-" printing technique is also used for other Hiroshige's work, "Ishiyama by the Lake Biwa in Omi Province". The thin shade of the cloud is not actually carved on the woodblock. It is printed by printer's random bokashi gradation technique which requires advanced printing skill.
