歌川国政「市川團十郎 暫」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

The Actor Ichikawa Danjuro in the title of Shibaraku

This work is remarkable for its bold composition and colors. It depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro V. The print shows Danjuro's ornately painted face in full profile, where it comes into contact with the edge of his red garment sleeve, which is painted with the familiar mimasu crest of three nested squares. The picture suraface is composed of a series of geometrical color planes of different textures and gives us a glimpse of Kunimasa's strikingly modern design sense.
