魚屋北渓「鯉の滝登り図」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

A Carp Ascending a Waterfall

Hokkei was a prominent disciple of Katsushika Hokusai. He ran a fish store in Yotsuya Samegahashi, so he was also known as Totoya Hokkei (fish shop Hokkei). The image of a carp climbing a waterfall is based on the old story of "Dragon Gate Waterfall" from the Chinese historical text. In this story, many fish attempt to climb a waterfall called Dragon Gate on the Yellow River, but only the carp successfully ascends, transforming into a dragon, symbolizing success in life. This work vividly and dynamically portrays the carp climbing the waterfall and is considered one of Hokkei's finest pieces.

An Ukiyo-e artist in Edo period. He ran a fish market favored by the Matsudaira Shima Province family in Yotsuya Samegahashi, so he was known as Totoya Hokkei (fishshop Hokkei), and he embraced this nickname himself.
