マーティン・ワトソン Martin Whatson

Martin Whatson (b. 1984) is a street artist based in Norway. The newly completed woodcut print, "Sea Turtle," features one of his iconic animal motifs primarily rendered in stencils and overlaid with graffiti elements like tagging. The contrast between the sea turtle, depicted in gray gradients, and the graffiti layered on top is vividly brought to life through woodcut printing techniques. Additionally, each print has been finished as a unique work of art, with Mr. Whatson himself adding hand-painted elements to give each piece its own individuality.

彫ーCarving process

Concentrating on the tip of the knife to bring the sea turtle to life

This piece shows Martin Whatson’s signature fusion of stencil and graffiti styles. With each stroke, the carver carefully interprets Whatson’s artistic vision, carving out his distinctive lines.
Creating such delicate lines with a single knife requires the utmost concentration and precision.

摺ーPrinting process

Light and brilliant colors are born from materials and techniques that are unique to Japan.

The light and vibrant colors of traditional Japanese woodcut prints are achieved through materials and techniques unique to Japan. Using a baren rubbing pad, the printer presses water-based paints deep into the fibers of carefully handcrafted paper made from paper mulberry. As the printer layers and blends colors, he experiences Whatson’s artistic vision coming to life.

Hand-finished by Whatson, each piece is transformed, reborn as a unique work of art.

Artist Profile

<h3>Martin Whatson(1984-)</h3>

Martin Whatson (b. 1984) is a Norwegian born and based stencil artist. While studying Art and Graphic design at Westerdals School of Communication, Oslo, he discovered stencils and the urban art scene. He had been interested in Graffiti for years, following the development within street art closely. In 2004 he started his own artistic production. His artistic expression started off more political, inspired by DOLK and Banksy, but has developed into a more subtle expression. He has a cheerful, very much recognizable, and almost feminine touch. Still, his expression is very much masculine, filled with in your face-statements that represent a young and vigorous group of upcoming artists. Since his artistic debut in 2006, he has had several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows.
