Atsushi Kaga
Atsushi Kaga is a Japanese artist based in Dublin, Ireland. Mr. Kaga's unique world and its residents are created based on the two cultural experiences of Ireland and Japan and are loved by many fans across borders.
Mr. Kaga says that creating ukiyo-e as an ukiyo-e artist has been his longtime dream. "One Hundred Views of Ireland / St. Patrick's Cathedral, The Liberties" is his first woodcut print of Irish scenery created using traditional woodcut printing techniques unique to Japan. The Kaga world, Usacchi, dressed in the work cloth of his respected ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi, and a symbol of Irish history, St. Patrick's Cathedral is expressed by the bright yet soft colors that are the charm of woodcut prints. This is the beginning of the "One Hundred Views of Ireland / St. Patrick's Cathedral, The Liberties."

Carving process
A brade of a carver's knife gives birth to Atsushi Kaga's ukiyo-e world
A carver freely carves lines on the hard woodblock made of mountain cherry with his sharp "Kogatana" carving knife. A carver is faithful to the expression of lines for ukiyo-e woodblock prints, which Mr. Kaga particularly focused on in the original drawing.
Printing process
Color of the sky in Ireland is born from washi papers and watercolors
The vivid yet warm colors are unique to Japanese woodcut printing. The beautiful color of Ireland's sky is born from embedding particles of pigment in the fibers of washi paper made from paper mulberry with the baren rubbing pad.
