宮﨑優 Yu Miyazaki
Nihonga (modern Japanese-style painting) artist Yu Miyazaki captivates viewers with her bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), distinguished by delicate lines and gentle color palette. She won the 9th Adachi Contemporary UKIYOE Award, and her first woodcut print, Full Bloom -Hanazakari-, produced in collaboration with contemporary carvers and printers, was enthusiastically received. Since then, she has continued to produce contemporary bijin-ga, steadily expanding her range of activity year by year.
Yu Miyazaki’s Newest Woodcut Print Twilight Now Available
We are pleased to announce the release of Twilight, the long-awaited third woodcut print by Yu Miyazaki.
Miyazaki’s latest work, Twilight, follows Full Bloom -Hanazakari-, which depicts spring cherry blossoms, and Rich Black Hair Flowing Through Her Comb, which portrays a woman in a summer yukata. This work, with an autumnal theme, is an homage to Hirezaki Eiho (1880–1968), a painter who gained renown with his bewitching bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) in the Nihonga (modern Japanese-style painting) tradition. Miyazaki’s work compellingly connects the tradition of woodcut printmaking, the changing seasons, and the history of bijin-ga.
To coincide with the release, all three of Yu Miyazaki’s woodcut prints will be on view at the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints showroom during the period below.

彫ーCarving process
Carving the delicate lines of flowing black hair
The expression of hair in bijin-ga has been passed down from the ukiyo-e of the Edo period and the "shin-hanga" ("new woodcut prints") of the Taisho era. In this work, Miyazaki focused most on the lines of the flowing black hair. The lines of the hair of the Reiwa era beauty were carved while paying respect to the artists and artisans of each era.
摺ーPrinting process
Elegance created by the texture of Japanese paper and the soft color of woodcut prints
Miyazaki's paintings of beautiful women have an elegant atmosphere, which is expressed through soft and transparent colors. Making use of the texture of Japanese paper, the world view of Miyazaki's work is printed with care.
