Ayako Rokkaku "Untitled 1"
Untitled 1 features a girl with the large, upturned eyes that have become a hallmark of Ayako Rokkaku’s work. Her dress appears to be made of fluffy clouds and red flowers, and the twist of her body as she looks back over her shoulder introduces lively movement to the entire composition. Rokkaku’s whimsical yet dynamic vision takes on remarkable form in the brilliant colors of a woodcut print. The work was exhibited at the Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art in the solo show Magic Hand: Ayako Rokkaku, accompanied by woodblocks and materials illustrating the production process. At that time in particular, Ms. Rokkaku took a strong interest in traditional Japanese crafts, and her ambition to collaborate with artisans was evident in various parts of the exhibition.
