Beauty Looking Back
A Beloved Classic for the Ages
<p>The Crowning Masterwork from the Final Years of Moronobu, Father of Ukiyo-e</p>
"Beauty Looking Back" is one of the defining masterpieces of Japanese art, painted by Hishikawa Moronobu, an artist active during the early Edo period (1603–1868). Today it is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum.
Moronobu is celebrated as the father of ukiyo-e, establishing a new pictorial genre depicting everyday life, popular customs, and beauties.
"Beauty Looking Back", a landmark work from Moronobu’s later years, captures a woman in the splendid dress of the Genroku era (1688–1704) in the fleeting moment she turns to look over her shoulder. Her slender standing figure, the flowing lines of her robe, and the refinement of her quiet bearing continue to captivate viewers even today, more than 300 years later.
*The original work (in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum) will be on view at the Seikado Bunko Art Museum in Marunouchi, Tokyo, from June 27 to July 12, 2026.

<p>A Hand-Painted Work Reproduced as a Woodcut Print</p>
This woodcut print was produced in 1996 as part of an initiative by the Adachi Foundation for the Preservation of Woodcut Printing (established by the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints) to preserve and promote traditional woodcut printing techniques.
With the cooperation of the Tokyo National Museum, where the original is held, highly skilled carvers and printers studied the painting and recreated it in woodcut form, fully conveying its charm.
Reproducing a hand-painted original in woodcut demonstrated the remarkable fidelity possible with traditional woodcut printing techniques, while also giving these artisans a valuable opportunity to refine their skills and carry the tradition forward.

<p>Two Mounting Options to Suit Various Interiors</p>
"Beauty Looking Back", a timeless masterpiece of Japanese art, can now be enjoyed at home. Two formats are available: a hanging scroll and a framed version.
A scroll mounting looks just right in a Japanese-style room or a tokonoma alcove, letting you enjoy the woodcut print in a calm, composed setting. The painting "Beauty Looking Back" on which this print is based has itself come down to us as a hanging scroll, so a scroll mounting replicates the work in the form closest to its original state.
The scroll-mounted version is delivered in a dedicated paulownia box. In 1810, Santo Kyoden, a writer of popular fiction active in the late Edo period (1603–1868), inscribed the box that held the "Beauty Looking Back" scroll with the words “Beauty in Half Profile.” The paulownia box accompanying this product reproduces that inscription.

A framed version is ideal for everyday spaces such as a living room or entryway, letting you enjoy the beauty of the woodcut print in your daily surroundings. It suits Western-style and Japanese-style rooms alike, and the resplendent figure in kimono and her dignified bearing give the entire space an air of elegance.

Beauty Looking Back
"Beauty Looking Back", which captures the moment a woman turns to glance back over her shoulder, has a composition that was highly unusual for its day (the early Edo period, 1603–1868). The emphasis placed on her beautiful profile inspired the popular fiction writer Santo Kyoden to inscribe the box holding the work with “Beauty in Half Profile” in 1810.
This composition brings out the sumptuous dress of the day all the more, from the hairstyle and obi knot fashionable in the Genroku era (1688–1704) to the kimono patterned with cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums in three tiers. The supple drapery lines, which trace a faint movement below the knee, are another detail that rewards attention, and lend her quiet bearing a lingering air of refinement.
Reflecting the prosperous and stylish ambience of the Genroku era, this painting is regarded as the finest of Moronobu’s hand-painted works, and today it remains as widely cherished as ever.
