鳥居清長「風俗東之錦 汐汲み」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Shiokumi Dance

This print illustrates two girls dancing to "Brine Drawers", a tragic love romance about two girls, Matsukaze and Murasame, who used to draw water from the sea for salt manufacture. They are clad in dresses with designs associated with the story, and their demeanors are characteristically impressive.

Kiyonaga was appointed as the fourth leader of the Torii School, which monopolized commissions for ebanzuke (illustrated program notes) and kanban (theatrical posters) for kabuki theaters. After being a pupil of the third leader Kiyomitsu, he expanded his repertoire to include "beautiful-woman picture" and later became a leading figure among full-length "beautiful-woman picture" artists.
