鳥居清長「風俗東之錦 盆栽売り」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Bonsai Vendor

This beautifully composed print shows a young male plant vendor, crouched before two lady customers and their boy servant. The color scheme is subdued but rich. The season is clearly the New Yea as the plant vendor is selling Adonis, and dwarf pine and plum trees that he has carried in using a shoulder pole.

Kiyonaga was appointed as the fourth leader of the Torii School, which monopolized commissions for ebanzuke (illustrated program notes) and kanban (theatrical posters) for kabuki theaters. After being a pupil of the third leader Kiyomitsu, he expanded his repertoire to include "beautiful-woman picture" and later became a leading figure among full-length "beautiful-woman picture" artists.
