鳥居清長「風俗東之錦 雨中湯帰り」アダチ版復刻浮世絵

Beauties Returning from Bath

Most Kiyonaga picture depict standing groups of wholesome beauties who are charmingly feminine and tenderly graceful. In this composition one can almost hear the merry conversation of the girls on their way home from a public bathhouse. The avoidance of loud colors gives them the air of decent girls.

Kiyonaga was appointed as the fourth leader of the Torii School, which monopolized commissions for ebanzuke (illustrated program notes) and kanban (theatrical posters) for kabuki theaters. After being a pupil of the third leader Kiyomitsu, he expanded his repertoire to include "beautiful-woman picture" and later became a leading figure among full-length "beautiful-woman picture" artists.
