Kubo Shunman (1757-1820)　apprenticed under Kitao Shigemasa and excelled in painting full-body portraits of beautiful women in the Kiyonaga style. He became renowned for his masterpieces featuring a manner known as "beni-girai" meaning "red-hating." In beni-girai, images are expressed using a limited color palette, typically shades of sumi ink and purple, rather than the vibrant colors typical of traditional ukiyo-e. Shunman's mastery of beni-girai added a unique charm to his artworks, distinguishing him as one of the foremost artists of his time.
