Red Carp

Utagawa Toyokuni I was a disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu. Toyokuni made significant contributions to the late ukiyo-e woodcut print world. He left behind numerous works in the genre of actor prints and bijin-ga. The print "Red Carp" is one of Toyokuni's rare works in the category of "birds and flowers print." The koi carp, creating spiraling water currents as it swiftly moves forward, is depicted with a sense of liveliness and freshness. Additionally, the contrast between the transparent watercolor background and the scarlet hue of the koi carp creates a beautifully harmonious piece.

The artist, Utagawa Toyokuni, was a pupil of Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814), paralleled in fame with his fellow student Toyohiro (1765or1774-1828). He was always alert to liking of the public, and was a man of ready adaptability. He often imitated, with almost excessive persistence, the styles of such senior artists as Kitao Shigemasa (1739-1820) and Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815), and sought inspiration about color schemes from Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806). It might be said that his pliable attitude in art has caused his work to be under-estimated.
