This picture appears to be set in the upstairs living room of three courtesans in a brothel, with the sea of Shinagawa seen through the barred window. Their slovenly poses reflect the atmosphere of the red-light district of Shinagawa post town, where they sold favors to travelers.

Kiyonaga was appointed as the fourth leader of the Torii School, which monopolized commissions for ebanzuke (illustrated program notes) and kanban (theatrical posters) for kabuki theaters. After being a pupil of the third leader Kiyomitsu, he expanded his repertoire to include "beautiful-woman picture" and later became a leading figure among full-length "beautiful-woman picture" artists.
