A smiling Kewpie doll turns to look over its shoulder, its body covered with elaborate tattoos. The designs feature auspicious motifs such as large-earlobed bringer of good fortune Fukusuke, a papier-mâché dog, the bodhisattva Daruma, and a beckoning cat. The figure of the Kewpie doll is endearing yet emanates the subtle defiance that is characteristic of Kumi Machida’s work.
This print was created as one of a pair with different background colors, an approach only possible with printmaking. The vivid red background gives the Kewpie at the center a powerful sense of volume.
