Yu Miyazaki "Twilight"
This is the third woodcut print produced by Nihonga (modern Japanese-style painting) painter Yu Miyazaki, who captivates viewers with her bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), distinguished by delicate lines and gentle color palette, produced in collaboration with contemporary carvers and printers. The woman standing with both hands clasped on her chest and a pensive expression is an homage to Hirezaki Eiho (1880–1968), a painter who gained renown for his bewitching bijin-ga.
Through extensive use of the bokashi (gradation) technique, the work vividly represents the woman’s translucent white skin and lustrous black hair. The contrast between the indigo of the spider chrysanthemum motif on her kimono and the deep crimson of the autumn leaves gives the composition a refined and graceful atmosphere.
Miyazaki depicted spring and summer in her previous two works, and here she has captured autumn. The work compellingly connects the tradition of woodcut printmaking, the changing seasons, and the history of bijin-ga.
