ニック・ウォーカー Nick Walker
Nick Walker is an artist from Bristol, UK, best known for works featuring a bowler-hatted gentleman named Vandal. A key figure in the stencil graffiti movement of the 1980s, he is said to have influenced Banksy. Walker rose to prominence in the late 2000s, with his early signature piece Moona Lisa drawing widespread attention after selling for a high price at auction, further boosting his popularity. With a global fan base, he receives commissions from around the world, and his works can be seen in urban environments in New York, Paris, and Norway. He also recreated New York graffiti-covered streetscapes for Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut.
In collaboration with the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints, Walker produced three woodcut prints, including his take on Mount Fuji as well as his signature characters Vandal and Mona Simpson.

彫ーCarving process
Focusing all of his attention on the point of his knife, the carver creates smooth, elegant lines.
Walker typically uses stencils to produce his works. The process of cutting stencils is similar to the carving stage of woodcut printing, and he took a strong interest in traditional woodcut printmaking techniques. During his visit to the studio, he witnessed the carvers’ artistry firsthand and praised it with a heartfelt “Amazing!”

摺ーPrinting process
Light and brilliant colors are born from materials and techniques that are unique to Japan.
Enjoying the natural affinity between stencil graffiti and the woodcut printmaking process, Walker actively incorporated bokashi (gradation), a distinctive feature of traditional woodcut prints, into his work.
