Chris Ofili "Satyr Night (waterfall)"
For this project, Chris Ofili, who has long been engaged in the study and appreciation of ukiyo-e, oversaw a wide range of experiments with a group of artisans to realize truly original woodcut prints.
This print features a satyr – a mythological being – and a female companion, depicted in translucent, stained-glass-like colors. Their heads are bowed and their eyes closed. The female figure holds in her mouth the stem of a flower, which disperses gold dots, and the satyr blows a cloud of the same particles, which float across the image, symbolizing seeds, spores, or even constellations of stars. There is an interplay between the velvet beauty of the black and the subtle aurora-like light, illuminating the grain of the wood. This “midnight sunrise” was conceived by Ofili and achieved through a close collaboration with the artisans.
Feeling that the woodcut prints have taken on a life of their own, the artist is truly delighted with the final edition.

彫ーCarving
Preserving the Mysterious Vitality of the Lines
Emerging from the lush natural environment of the Caribbean, Ofili’s lines are free-flowing and brimming with vitality. The carvers cut them into blocks of mountain cherry with great care, preserving the supple quality of the lines that represent the inhabitants of a mythic world.
摺ーPrinting
Drawing on the Material to Incorporate Forms Created by Nature
The aurora-like light suspended in the sky is rendered using a zelkova printing block selected specifically for its pronounced grain, incorporating forms produced by nature into the work. The flecks of gold, another important visual element, are created by sprinkling gold powder onto the print at the final stage of the process to add brilliant highlights.
