Robert Lazzarini "untitled"
Robert Lazzarini has been known for his sculptures characterized by distortion and deformation, as well as paintings that employ moiré visual effects. In this work, the faint silhouette that emerges from the black vertical stripes is that of American actress Sharon Tate (1943–69). The image is based on a 1968 portrait photograph in which she appears eternally young and beautiful. However, the countless reproductions of her image across various media have rendered her personal identity as an individual increasingly ambiguous. Created using traditional ukiyo-e techniques, this work may be seen as a highly thought-provoking interpretation of the bijin-ga (portrait of a beautiful woman) in a contemporary context. It is also a compelling example of the expressive power of sumi ink and washi paper.
